Music Video Post #2: Representations & Stereotypes

  Stereotypes of rock music videos

  • Tend to focus on the performance of the band itself, showcasing the musicality and musicians
  • Have low-key lighting to convey a more gritty atmosphere
  • Clothing can range from casual to more performance, or fitting of a specific time period
  • Some alternative music videos can have extreme costumes and makeup
  • May have other extreme elements, like pyro and weapons
Examples

"Famous Last Words" by My Chemical Romance music video
  • Fire used in the music video
  • Black makeup, black parade suits - band members are also actors
  • Showcases the band and singer as well as the background

"Rock Show" by Blink-182 music video
  • Extreme fisheye
  • Dimly lit environment
  • Showcases the band and singer

Rock music is considered gritty and often darker than most pop songs, and alternative rock often seeks to expand these conventions, incorporating experimental elements. In a song like "Creep," we will seek to incorporate both band performance as well as storyline throughout the music video.
