Commercial Post #2: Codes & Conventions Study

1. Burberry Hero Adam Driver Ad

In this ad, the camera is following Adam Driver as he performs various athletic acts while shifting between his horse and human forms. The camera uses various follow and inferior shots to accentuate Driver and the horse's masculinity and athleticism. The ad also uses fades between Driver and the horse so as to draw a striking similarity between their builds, and to build up towards the final shot of him fusing with the horse to become a centaur. The music used in the ad is strangely sensual, so as to instill within the viewer a primal, deep-seeded feeling of masculinity and power, such as that which our cave-dwelling ancestors used to experience. All these elements come together to seduce the viewer into purchasing a bottle of Burberry Hero.

2. Old Spice Muscle Music

In this ad, the audience is staring at a single, continuous shot of Terry Crews wired up to a music-making machine composed of various instruments. As he flexes his muscles, the corresponding instruments play. Between each beat, he yells "MUSCLE!" and occasionally screams. The ad creates a call to action by appealing to the audience's masculinity by displaying Terry Crews and his herculean figure, demonstrating that Old Spice is only meant for the strong. This entices the audience into purchasing a bottle of Old Spice in the vein hope of being like Terry Crews.
